Please submit any sightings (giving as accurate a location as possible), news reports, photos, or other media so that we can continue to map wallabies in the UK
Why collect wallaby sightings? Red-necked wallabies are native to south-east Australia, including Tasmania. They are popular and charismatic animals and so are often kept in both public and private zoological collections. They're also talented escape artists and there have been a number of small populations recorded in the UK since the mid-1900s. The most famous was a population in the Peak District that disappeared in the 1990s. In 2020, Drs Holly English and Anthony Caravaggi published the first paper exploring the phenomenon of wallabies in the UK since the Peak District population disappeared. The paper is open-access and can be read here. The paper gained a lot of international attention and the team are embarking on the next step - finding out as much as they can about the UK population and whether we should all get used to seeing wallabies expand across the UK in the future. UK Wallabies is also on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ukwallabies/ The project is headed by Dr. Anthony Caravaggi of the University of South Wales. |
